As each year draws to a close, Quanta Magazine conducts its Year in Review: highlighting the biggest breakthroughs in biology, computer science, physics, and math. In late 2023 I was approached by producers at Quanta to help develop and manage the graphics style for the corresponding video series.
I especially enjoy working on STEM topics. These fields offer fascinating and complex stories that benefit so much from thoughtful visuals and design. I was also very excited to work with some of the talent in Quanta’s rolodex—artists and designers whose work I was already familiar with and admired.
GFX Art Direction & Toolkit
My first task was to work off the strong aesthetic previously developed by the team at Quanta. I used that as a starting point in creating an art direction deck that incorporated variations in visual language depending on subject. Math and computer science explainers often have different visual needs than biology and physics.
My main role was in coordinating the team of illustrators/animators and acting as a liaison with producers. I also built a suite of templates and MOGRTS to expedite the production turnaround, and designed archival treatments and data visuals.
Below are some examples of work created by the illustration/design team.
